The vision

The vision for the NZ$14 million redevelopment of The University of Auckland South Pacific Centre for Marine Science on the headland overlooking the Goat Island Marine Reserve at Leigh is a combination of:
- the reuse of existing buildings, including the visitor accommodation unit, library, teaching areas, kitchen and dining buildings;
- the relocation and refurbishment of two student accommodation buildings;
- the use of the masonry block tank room, on which the existing laboratory building currently sits, as the base for the new interpretive centre; and
- two major new buildings – a public interpretive centre and the science centre.
The Centre's redevelopment will also include a new endowed
Chair in Marine Science.
